VILLAZAN is pleased to present Yang Hyun Jun’s solo exhibition entitled “Ordinary people” featuring a series of works that go beyond the personal mother figure to explore the theme of everyday life among ordinary people, blending reality and imagination. “Ordinary People” opens on April 4 at VILLAZAN New York.

Yang Hyun Jun (b. 1980) was born and raised in Busan, Korea. He earned a BFA in Korean Art Painting from Busan Silla University in 1996, and in 2009 a PhD in Fine Arts from Silla University Graduate School of Fine Arts. Hyun Jang's works have been exhibited in multiple solo exhibitions and have participated in a variety of group exhibitions worldwide. Over the past two decades, he has participated in numerous art fairs and received awards for his works.

The artist Yang Hyun Jun explores in his "Adult Child" works the relationship with his mother and the emotions evoked through the symbol of a girl, emphasizing emotions and feelings. The presence of the girl in the work establishes a direct connection to the artist's mother, while embodying the ambiguity inherent in ever-changing representations that transcend time and space.

In this exhibition, the contemporary elements of his works are connected to the imagination of ordinary people in modern times, which fosters empathy among the audience. Through fragmented images and playful forms, the works joyfully convey the aesthetic aspects of the differences and similarities of ordinary existence, while the symbolic elements offer the viewer different opportunities for interpretation.

In the artist’s own words “the work that started with my mother is now telling the story of our mothers and, by extension, all people. It expresses the ordinary but special life within it, and depicts the stories of all women”.
