Katherine Bernhardt turns the boredom into fun
Paula Latiegui

The American artist Katherine Bernhardt achieves the perfect balance between humour and conscience to represent the consumerism of the society we form today.

Katherine Bernhardt is a Clayton, M.O. born artist capable of turning the dullest thing into the funniest thing. Hence her international recognition and unstoppable growth.

Have you ever wondered what would be in the brain of the contemporary pink panther? What if there is a parallel universe in which sharks use toilet paper? Using nature and symbolism Bernhardt strikes the perfect balance between humour and consciousness to depict the consumerism of the society we form today.

That's the thing about growing up in a house surrounded by things that didn't even fit on the floor, that she has learned to make her own personal brand out of it. For her, everything revolves around shapes, colors, graphics and textures. Anything that looks boring has her full attention. In an interview with Émergent Magazine the artist explained "I choose what I'm attracted to at the time. Right now, I'm into crocs and sowers and mushrooms. In my paintings, I continually add to the lexicon of images that I use. I have several images that keep coming and others I forget about".

Bernhardt sees contemporary art as almost a miracle, because in the end it is about doing something primal; picking up a paintbrush and painting in the age of computers and technology could be considered an act of rebellion. She recommends spending as much time as we can looking at the colors that can be found in an exhibition or the complex architecture which might come across in the most unexpected corner. "Art as a reminder that there is still something good in the world".

The artist captures her personality, interests and way of life in paintings that are born on the ground, using acrylic with a lot of water (so that the paint moves and creates those colours and mess that cannot be achieved in any other way) and spray. The crown for the queen of fun and mockery in the world of painting goes to Katherine Bernhardt. Nobody does it like her.
