LOBSTER PALACE: Philip Colbert Transforms The Palace Hotel Madrid
Lucía Manjón Herranz

Lobster Palace is the first exhibition by the British artist in Spain and will be open to the public from February 26 to April 10, 2026.

On the occasion of Madrid’s ARCO Week, The Palace Hotel presents an exclusive collaboration with Philip Colbert, known as the “godson of Andy Warhol.”

The pop artist transforms the spaces of one of the city’s, and the country’s, most iconic architectural landmarks with a selection of paintings and sculptures from his iconic lobster universe.

His lobsters integrate into the historic architecture of The Palace, creating a dialogue between contemporary art, pop culture, and the hotel’s unique character.

The lobster is the recurring figure in Colbert’s work, acting as both alter ego and symbol. The animal represents luxury while also ironically evoking decadence.

“I became an artist when I became a lobster.”

At the center of the lobby stands a monumental lobster made of polished stainless steel with a mirror-like finish. Its reflective surface mirrors both the architecture and the visitor, integrating them into the artwork. The piece also suggests a certain surrealism, while connecting to Salvador Dalí, an artist who loved lobsters and maintained a close relationship with the hotel in the 1970s.

“I was interested in creating a dialogue between my work, the space, and that surrealist tradition.”

Sculptures composed of stacked lobsters are presented as totems, celebrating community through repetition. Two paintings displayed in 17th century frames are also part of the exhibition, paying homage to Spanish artistic tradition. The exhibition brings humor and art history into the space, transforming the hotel from a setting into a contemporary artwork.

The experience extends to the restaurant La Cúpula, where a special afternoon tea inspired by Philip Colbert’s art is offered. The artist has also designed exclusive tableware, bringing art into objects and everyday life.

Lobster Palace reaffirms The Palace’s commitment to art and culture, as well as its cosmopolitan and contemporary spirit.
