The Museum of Modern Art in New York presents “Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition”, an unusual compilation of almost 200 works full of originality and ingenuity by the visionary Swiss artist that brings together extravagant objects, sculptures, jewelry designs and collages formed from natural materials.

"Nobody will give you freedom, you have to take it" said Meret Oppenheim. When she was only 22 years old, the artist created one of the most iconic pieces of surrealism: a fur breakfast set. The idea came to her while having breakfast with Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar at the cafe les fleurs in Paris, when she realized how good it would be to have a fur like the one on her bracelet (which Picasso had just praised) to cover her cup so her tea would not get cold. Later Breton baptized it as “Le déjeuner en fourrure” (Breakfast with fur) so with the sensation she provoked by the piece, between pleasant by the touch of the fur but disgusting at the thought of putting it in the mouth, Oppenheim managed to get into all the surrealists.

Switzerland's most prestigious art prize, which supports young artists, architects and cultural mediators, bears his name. Oppenheim is a clear reference for anyone who knows her work, which will be presented for the first time in more than 25 years in the United States and can be visited from October 30, 2022 to March 4, 2023. In addition, the exhibition will feature an X-ray of the artist's head and the immense painting Red Head, Blue Body, which used to hang above the headboard of her bed.
